Ohio House Bill 96 Brings Changes to Attendance Laws
Kari Basson

Ohio House Bill 96 took effect on September 30, 2025.

  • The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released official guidance in mid-October, requiring all school districts to align with this new law.
  • The Kettering City Schools are actively implementing these changes to ensure full legal compliance, while maintaining a commitment to fairness, transparency, and partnership with our KCS families.
  • Under the new law, medical absences are no longer counted separately from other excused absences.
  • What this means is that ALL time missed from school—whether excused, medical, or unexcused—now counts toward a student’s total hours missed for the school year.
  • The new attendance requirements will take full effect with the 2026–2027 school year. Selected components of the new law will be phased in, beginning with the second semester of the current 2025–2026 school year to allow a smooth and consistent transition.

Sign Up for Calamity Day Notifications
Jenny Tucker

It's that time of the year!

When inclement weather makes it unsafe to transport students to school, the district will delay or close school in the interest of safety.

When there is a school delay or closing, the Kettering Schools will post this decision on the district website. Facebook page and via our local TV stations.

Families and staff also have the option to sign up for phone call and/or text notifications when we have a "calamity/snow" day.

Please use this link to receive a phone call and/or text message when we delay or close school.

Please note: Phone calls and text messages are made/sent out as quickly as possible, once a decision has been made to delay or close school. Every effort is made by the district administration to make these decisions between 5:15-6 a.m., so phone calls and text messages will typically go out very early in the morning.

Community Encouraged to Visit Future-Ready Facilities Webpage
Kari Basson

Our Future-Ready Facilities Plan addresses the critical need to replace the majority of our aging facilities -- which are currently between 60 and 77 years old -- with brand new, fully accessible school buildings designed specifically for modern learning environments.

This is a crucial project supported by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC), which will provide a significant portion of the total co-funded cost of the overall project, making this transformative investment in our students' future possible.

We encourage you to explore the district's detailed Future-Ready Facilities Plan webpage to learn more about the plan, the timeline, the design, and the partnership with the OFCC.
